Editorial standards & review process

How we research, write, fact-check and keep every TaxFly calculator and guide accurate.

Who reviews our content

Our tax content is reviewed by Laura Michelle Davis, ACCA · CTA (Chartered Tax Adviser) · ATT · BSc Economics, UC Berkeley. Laura Michelle Davis is a Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA) who also holds the ACCA and ATT qualifications and a BSc in Economics from UC Berkeley. She specialises in UK personal tax, covering income tax, National Insurance, self-employment and capital gains, and has built her career making complicated rules easy to follow. At TaxFly, Laura writes and edits the tax guides and explainers, checking that figures reflect current HMRC rates and that every explanation answers the question a real person is actually asking. Her goal is plain-English clarity you can trust and act on.

Where our figures come from

Every rate, threshold and band on TaxFly is taken directly from the official primary sources and recorded in a single source-of-truth file that powers the calculators, so the maths on the page always matches the published rules:

  • GOV.UK - UK income tax, National Insurance, VAT, Capital Gains, dividends, SDLT and Corporation Tax
  • Revenue Scotland - Scottish income tax and Land & Buildings Transaction Tax (LBTT)
  • Welsh Government - Land Transaction Tax (LTT)

How a page is made

  1. Research. We gather the current rules and figures from the primary sources above for the relevant tax year.
  2. Build. The calculator logic is wired to those exact figures, and we publish a worked example and the underlying formula so you can see how every number is reached.
  3. Draft & edit. Guides are written and edited for plain-English clarity. We use editorial tools to help draft, but every page is checked and edited by a person.
  4. Review. A qualified reviewer checks the figures and explanations against the official sources before publication.
  5. Date. We show a visible “last updated” date on every calculator and guide.

How we keep it current

UK tax changes every tax year on 6 April, and sometimes mid-year at a Budget. We review rate-sensitive pages each tax year and after any Budget that changes the figures, and update the “last updated” date when the content materially changes - not on every routine touch.

Accuracy & corrections

TaxFly provides estimates for guidance only and is not a substitute for professional, personalised tax advice. We work hard to be accurate, but if you think a figure is wrong we want to know - contact us and we’ll check it against the source and correct it promptly. For decisions that matter, speak to a qualified accountant or check directly with HMRC.
