Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, sorted

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords earning over £50,000 must keep digital records and file quarterly updates with HMRC. HMRC doesn't provide the software - and most sites explaining the rules are trying to sell you some. Our tools are free: check if you're in, see every deadline, and get your records organised.

Who has to join, and when

Your qualifying income is your gross self-employment turnover plus gross property income - before expenses. HMRC tests it on your most recent Self Assessment return.

Miss a quarterly update and you collect a penalty point; at the points threshold HMRC charges £200, then £200 for every further default. Work out your penalty risk.
