What is free, and what is not

Every calculator, guide and decision tool is free and always will be. An account saves your answers. A paid plan, when it exists, adds the things that cost us money to run.

The rule we hold ourselves to

Nothing a search engine can reach is ever behind a login. The 205 calculators, the guides, the life-event pages, the 20 decision tools and everything on them — the workings, the eligibility tests, the worked examples, the GOV.UK citations — are free to everyone, with no account.

What an account changes is personalisation: remembering your answers so you are asked each question once, keeping your saved decisions so we can tell you when one of them stops being true, and showing the itemised list rather than the total.

What is included at each tier.

About the paid plan

It does not exist yet, and this page says so rather than taking a pre-order. The plan is around £4 a month, and what it will carry is the work that costs us money per user rather than once: the document locker, Open Banking expense sorting, and the Self Assessment export pack.

Open Banking in particular has a real per-user cost and needs an agreement with an authorised provider, which is why it sits behind a price rather than being bundled into the free tier and quietly paid for with advertising.

How the free site is funded

Advertising, and partner links which we disclose on every block that carries one. We show the trigger — the fact about your situation that produced the offer — next to the offer itself, so you can judge the relevance rather than take our word for it. How we are funded, in full.

What we will not do

  • Gate a calculator, a guide, or any part of a decision tool that is useful without your figures.
  • Recommend a specific financial product to you personally. We show every option with the criteria we ranked them on — that is the difference between information and regulated advice.
  • Sell your data, or pass what you tell the tools to anyone. Your profile is either in your own browser or in your account, and nowhere else.
